Picasso and Little Silver Hands

Picasso and the great gypsy guitarist Manitas de Plata (Ricardo Balbiaro). He refused to play his guitar until ten years had passed after the death of Django Reinhardt.

This picture was taken in 1964 at Arles in the south of France. It was a now famous fiesta after the bullfights. Manitas had agreed to play in public (outside Gypsy circles) for the first time since Django died in 1953. Picasso, here hearing him for the first time exclaimed," Il vaut plus que moi!"
(He's worth more than me!)and proceeded to engrave a drawing on the gypsy's cypress and cedar guitar.
